Hello
I have had problems running QT music apps with mga/radeon and dri/drm enabled
in the 2.6 kernel however the latest lowlat patch (P8) has fixed most
problems (eg qjackctl muse rosegarden are now working). However there still
seems to be a problem when running mixxx - the dj software. All seems well
with 2.4 but not 2.6 - Has anybody else on the list had any success running
mixxx in a 2.6 environment using drm. And if so what graphics drivers are
you using?

Would I buy Finale or Sonar if they'd really play under Linux? I bought a lot
of advanced MIDI software for Windows as well as Sonar's not-so-little sister
Home Studio. Some stuff I got in exchange for beta testing or consulting with
the authors. No plans for Linux ports and I USE this stuff.
Maybe some of us would be Linux ports of premier applications. However, the
Linux world is sold on Open-Source. Most Linux geeks will never purchase
anything. Example, myself--I was considering buying the very reasonably
priced Lindows (now Linspire--wait for the real Microsoft Lindows :-)). Then
I saw and article about Knoppix. Did the job at an evern more reasonable
cost. Gnu?
If I can "make do" with notedit, probably would not shell out the dought for
Finale. Forget about Sibelius ... and ... there are very reasonably priced
package around in Windows if one can go with their qwerks and more and more
freebies as well. So I do not expect Coda or Cakewalk or Steinberg to get
into the Linux market anytime soon.

Can anyone suggest a good RME Card? I have looked at their website but was
wondering if anyone had personal preference. I preferably would like a
sound card with mutilple in/outs, mic in/outs, midi, spdif.
Once again I appreciate all the feedback. As for distros, I'm leaning
towards debian, but I will do some more research.
Thanks,
Thomas

Hi!
I met with the president nd founder of Coda, (Now Makemusic!) a few months
ago at work(Silver Burdett Ginn) and I asked him if they were going to
publish a Linux version of Finale now that they have completed an OSX
version. He said that his programming and marketing staff had brought the
idea up but that they were not going to make a Linux version at this time.
FYI.
Matt.

Subject: [PlanetCCRMA] Regarding NoteEdit, Finale, and rumor
Greetings:
I wrote to Joerg Anders, the author of NoteEdit, and he confirmed that
he is leaving off development of NoteEdit. Though I disagree with his
assessment of a possible Linux Finale, it's certainly his right to stay
with or go away from the helm of NoteEdit development, and he can use
any reason he prefers.
I have *no* confirmation regarding any Linux development at all from
Coda Music, the manufacturers of Finale. Unless someone knows more, I'd
say it's an unfounded rumor. I've read that some users have run Finale
under Wine: I can get it to open but it doesn't work after that.
There's some discussion whether to keep it in AGNULA and whether
AGNULA members might want to take over the development of NE. I realize
that NE has some possibly irritating dependencies, but I must add that
it is a unique Linux music notation editor with a well-evolved set of
features and an active user base.
I'm uneasy about the implications that mere rumor compelled Joerg to
abandon NE, though as I said, I respect Joerg's wishes and his
accomplishments with regard to NE. I'm confused as to why Finale's
presence might force a developer to consider his own work a closed case.
After all, Finale is expensive, closed-source, and not necessarily
suited to everyone's work methods. NE is free software, open-source, and
works nicely for me. I would hate to see it disappear.
Joerg said that since sources are available anyone can continue with
NE development. I hope that happens.
Best regards,
dp

I have two hard drives, hda and hdb, both UDMA66. hda has the ext3 root
partition, a swap partition, and a FAT32 partition. hdb just has one
10Meg FAT32 partition.
When I stream a .wav file from the FAT32 partition on hda through say
XMMS, the total system load is very low, just a few percent cpu load.
When I do the same, but from hdb's FAT32 partition, the cpu load hovers
at around 30-50%. What is responsible for all the extra cpu activity in
reading from the 2nd harddrive ?
Hi,
As posted on slashdot, someone has started up a hardware incompatibility list
for Linux. I didn't look to closely yet so I don't know about the quality and
how it's going to work.
Anyway, I think one of the goals is to put pressure on the hardware makers to
provide specs/drivers, which sounds like a good idea to me.
If anyone has any hardware to add, audio cards especially, here is the place:

Hmm... The X uses centrino and I am reading nothing but bad things
about centrino and linux...

Hello all-
I have a Digigram VXpocket v2 sound card for my Fujitsu laptop, and
have gotten as far as adding entries in /etc/pcmcia/config to get the
card recognized by cardmgr on insertion, and adding the lines
alias snd-card-1 snd-vxpocket
alias sound-slot-1 snd-vxpocket
post-install snd-vxpocket /usr/bin/vxloader
to /etc/modules.conf.
But when the card is inserted I get this in /var/log/messages:
Aug 23 10:47:17 localhost cardmgr[804]: socket 0: Digigram VXpocket
Aug 23 10:47:17 localhost cardmgr[804]: executing: 'modprobe snd-vxpocket'
Aug 23 10:47:17 localhost cardmgr[804]: + vxloader: no VX-compatible cards found
Aug 23 10:47:17 localhost cardmgr[804]: +
/lib/modules/2.4.26-1.ll.rhfc1.ccrma/kernel/sound/snd-vxpocket.o:

/lib/modules/2.4.26-1.ll.rhfc1.ccrma/kernel/sound/snd-vxpocket.o:

available
Aug 23 10:47:18 localhost cardmgr[804]: get dev info on socket 0
failed: Resource temporarily unavailable
The modules "snd-vxpocket", "snd-vx-cs", "snd-vx-lib" and "snd-hwdep"
are loaded after the card insertion, despite the messages saying that
"insmod snd-vxpocket" failed. But the card is not recognized by ALSA.
I'm running Fedora Core 1 with Planet CCRMA, kernel
2.4.26-1.ll.rhfc1.ccrma, and all my alsa packages are
1.0.4-1.cvs.rhfc1.ccrma.
I am totally stumped as to why the vxloader program won't see my card.
I'm apparently using version 1.0 of vxloader, and I've found that
there is a slightly newer version of the program (1.0.5) that I will
try as soon as I can. Does anyone have any ideas about this problem?
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
Jacob Last
