Hi.
Despite, as I just wrote on another msg, my Edirol UA-25 worked
flawlessly plug and play with any distribution and kernel I've tried,
I'm having problem getting an UA-20 (for my gf) recognized by alsa and
jack (tried Suse 10.0 and Slackware 10.2, both with kernel 2.6.13).
The interface is recognized in stardard mode (16bit), but before buying
it I read, also on this list if I remember well, that it should be fully
supported (with the ADVANCED DRIVER turned ON, so with 16bit and MIDI
support), like my UA-25.
Please help me, 'cause I bought the UA-20 for my girlfriend, as I'm
trying to convince her to downgrade to linux for her music production,
and she believes I'm a guru. :-)

Hi All,
I am using Linux Fedora FC4 and M-Audio Audiophile USB.
This card works perfectly in output when using ALSA directly,
e.g. alsaplay -d plughw:2 works fine!
Problems rise when I try using Jack.
even if I managed to get it starting with
jackd -dalsa -dplughw:2,0 -r44100 -p1024 -n4 -Pplughw:2,0 -S -o2
The sound out I get is weird, a distortion that looks to be related to
buffer cycles etc.
I am using jackd 0.100.1
Anyone that can help me on this?
I see that some of you could get it working fine with Jack. How did you
manage to do so?
So far I cannot record with ALSA too but it would be great to solve at
least the jack issue.
Thank you in advance for the help,
Ronny
Hi all,
I have become reasonably familiar with Linux, and recently completed the
transfer of all my existing MIDI compositions to a working setup based around
RoseGarden. I have also started experimenting with software synthesisers,
ZynAddSubFX being a particular favourite of mine. However, the problem I now
have is processor bandwidth. I seem to frequently run at more than 70% (as
indicated by Gkrellm) and just a sniff above that and things start to sound
really horrible. Also, the on-board sound card really can't manage the quality I
want, either for recording or playback.
The obvious solution is to build a completely new system specifically for sound
work, but I am totally baffled by the choices. MB, Processor, Memory, Sound
Card, and on, and on...
Can anyone suggest where I can go to get this all put together? I don't mind
paying for a GOOD system, and apart from the fact that all my files MUST be in
an open format I'm not too fussed about which distro/apps to use.
Of course, not only do I want to know what to get, I also need to know where to
get it. Somewhere North of the Isle of Wight would be a good start!

"flite" (festival-lite) is very simple and is only one binary file. It's
usage is "flite TextFile WavFile". But as you see, it only creates a WAV
file. I don't know about the quality compared to other programs. I
looked at the WAV file and it's a 16 bit mono file sampled at 8000.

Now that I listened again and closer to Jamerson's work some of it
sounds like black magic to me. The simple fact that he plucked all this
with his index finger exclusively makes me wanna cry really. Burkhard,
you play bass too?

Hello,
I have totem 0.100-5 installed. I have a CDrom drive at hdc (mounted
as /cdrom) and a DVDrom drive at hdd (mounted as /dvd).
When I place a DVD into hdd and then tell totem to "play disc", it
goes to hdc and reports:
Failed to play Audio/Video Disc. Please check that a disc is present
in the drive.
I've been unable to find a way to change this default behavior of
totem. Any ideas?
Thank you,
Stephen.
Hi,
Me again, it seems...
This is partly off-topic, not being strictly linux-related, but I
figured one of you was bound to know the answer to that one. I'm looking
for a simple reference or primer to digital audio; something that
wouldn't be language specific, but which would just cover the basics,
like sound generation, key parameters, and so forth. I'm not looking for
a book here, just some simple online resource that would send me on my
way and allow me to go to other more complete resources, should I need
to.
Thanks,
S.M.
