Greetings:
I want to transfer some vinyl recordings to hard-disk, and the USB
turntables look like a neat solution. Any recommended inexpensive units
that work well with Linux ?
Best,

Hello!
I experienced a strange thing, a couple of times now. When I compress a file
with flac (either version 1.1.2 or 1.1.4) mplayer says, that they are much
longer than they really are. The sound-output is correct and the "real"
playingtime is correct as well. But mplayer's time-display is racing.
I heard the same from a friend, who had problem with one file only, the rest
of the files he compressed in one go were all ok. He said, that some other
players refused to even play the strange file.
Does anybody know anything? any fixes for this problem?
Kindest regards
Julien

Hi group,
I think I have found a problem with the USB sound driver? It appears
that the current drive returns a x'81' for silence but it should be a
x'7f'.
When I use my laptop's sound device and record without a mic, I get
a file full of x'7f's. If I do the same with my cheap-o USB device
I get a file full of x'81's. The sound quality from the laptop is
unacceptable, so that is way I want to use the USB device.
I have written a recording program that I have a 'silence' filter
that filters out segments of dead air. It works with the laptop's
sound device but not the USB device. The filter works by remove
x'7f's after allowing a selectable amount. I get the results using
arecord which does not have the filtering.
The USB device is a C -Media Electronics, Inc. I am running FC6.

Hi there,
Well I managed to find Frank's post about the USB audiophile not working on kernel 2.6 all too late:
http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:wCOf2JHEquYJ:linuxaudio.org/pipermail/… - I got one thinking it would work for some reason. :( *sigh*
So it works on 2.4? :/ And are there any good audio-oriented distributions available using 2.4? (preferably one that is still maintained if possible ;))
Best,
-AL.
Hi all,
Thx for the responses.

Because I wanted an external card. ;)

Heh, Frank, you're a god, thx. :p I will try get a more bleeding edge setup running and see if I can't sort this out. Incidentally I had the same problem on my Gentoo machine and a fresh Ubuntu 7.10 install: in that dmesg showed some complaint about inconsistent number of interfaces/descriptors? I think the Behringer UCA202 would've been a much more sensible buy for me since it's much cheaper and suits my needs perfectly. Oh bother... ;)

Hi,
Do you know reactable ? http://mtg.upf.edu/reactable/
I found a tutorial to make my own table, using reacTIVision and a webcam.
But, reacTIVision don't seems to find my webcam whereas it works with
kopete.
my device is a logictech quick messenger, and I use the
qc-usb-messenger 1.6driver.
I am running Fedora 7 with Planet CCRMA.

Hello there!
There have been much talk lately about video being way too sparse on the
linux platform - which it really is. Since I am very interested in
video, and I would love to see it on linux, I think that something have
to be done.
One thing I think video on linux is lacking most is a strong community.
I believe that this is the one thing that could put video on the linux
map.
The number one thing to accomplish when gathering a community is
probably to establish a central place for talk and discussion. I think
that a "Linux Video Users"-mailing list would be very good for this
purpose.
The list would serve as a video-version of the LAA, LAU, and LAD-lists
and would intend on improving documentation and cooperation between the
different projects (be it editors, encoders, recorders, players,
frameworks, etcetera) and their users.
Would there be any interest for such list? Could this list (LAU) lend a
bit of server-space and gimmick for this project?
Sincerely,
Gasten
Dear all,
we would like to remind you that the submission deadline for

I am trying to get Cecilia 2.5 working in Linux, or failing that, at
least to clear some of the bugs out of the way. The first big bug I am
trying to deal with is to get the output of sndinfo parsed correctly
using tcl. This is difficult because the only tcl I know is what I
have learned in the last few hours.
The problem is that the sndinfo that ships with csound5 produces very
untidy output compared to earlier versions. A whole lot of error
messages are jumbled up with various tabs and control characters. The
actual information the program is supposed to provide staggers out the
pub with the rest of this mess via stderr instead of stdin. tcl just
doesn't like this.
I have been trying to strip away some of the cruft using tr and a line
of perl I found on the web, but these instructions both use characters
that have special functions in tcl and I cannot work out how to pass
them to these other programs unprocessed. I have no idea how to escape
them.
The procedure I need to debug is the following:
proc getSoundFileInfo {path} {
global prefs errno
catch {exec $prefs(help:CSND) -U sndinfo $path} stuff
if {[lsearch $stuff "AIFF"] == -1 && [lsearch $stuff "WAVE"] == -1
} {return 0}
set type [lindex $stuff [expr [lsearch $stuff "soundfile,"] - 1]]
if {$type == ""} {
set type [lindex $stuff [expr [lsearch $stuff "soundfile"] - 1]]
}
set dur [lindex $stuff [expr [lsearch $stuff "seconds"] - 1]]
set sr [string trim [lindex $stuff [expr [lsearch $stuff
"srate"] + 1]] ", "]
set tr [string trim [lindex $stuff [expr [lsearch $stuff ${sr},]
+ 1]] ", "]
set siz [lindex $stuff [expr [lsearch $stuff ${tr},] + 1]]
return "$dur $sr [string tolower $type] $tr $siz"
Basically I need to take $stuff, strip away the escapes and tabs, and
replace the newlines with spaces. I have been trying to do this using
"exec sndinfo $path 2>&1" piped into the following commands:
{perl -ne 'chomp; s/(^\s+|\s+$)//g; print "$_ " if ( $_ ne "" );'
tr -d [:cntrl:]
tr -d /t
but I can only get tr -d /t to work as I want it to. I am hampered as
well by my slow and hamfisted debugging techniques. Obviously it would
be much more elegant if we could do do this job in tcl.
Also does anyone know what I should replace the "string tolower" in
the last line with? The current version of sndinfo now returns "WAV"
rather than "WAVE", but "wave", "wav", is what the functions that call
getSoundFileInfo need.
Before anyone asks the obvious question, the reason I am trying to use
cecilia 2.5 because version 2.0 doesn't work very well, with only
about 40% of its features usable. And the reason I am trying to get
csound5 working with it is because csound 4 segfaults when processing
most of the cecilia orchestras. In any case it is a real pity that
cecilia 2.5 has been available for the last 3 or 4 years, but has only
ever been packaged for the mac. All that I actually had to do to get
it up and running was to replace the contents of
/usr/local/lib/cecilia with its conterparts in Cecilia.app. Scores
that don't require you to load a sound file seem to work fine judging
by the little experience I have had so far.

| On behalf of Andreas Persson, I am pleased to announce the release of
| gigedit 0.1.0 [1], an instrument editor for gig files. You can find a
| screenshot here[2].
|
| * With gigedit it is possible to modify existing, as well as to
| create new Gigasampler format instruments from scratch, which are not only
| accepted by LinuxSampler, but now also by Gigastudio.
|
| * You can run gigedit as stand-alone application or "attached"[3]
| to LinuxSampler. The latter case allows you to play and edit instruments
| at the same time, making all your modifications immediately audible,
| without having to reload the instruments into a sampler.
|
| * You can simply edit instruments by selecting the respective
| sampler channel and clicking on "Edit" in either QSampler or JSampler,
| which automatically spawns gigedit in "attached" mode.
|
| Plese notice that this is still a very young instrument editor, so better
| backup your .gig files before editing them with this application!

Hi, congrats.
Will gigaedit be able to play .gig files by itself?
I mean: linuxsampler is not free software as in freedom, so, It would be nice
to have some replacement.
