Hey all,
I've recently gotten interested in ripping some of my old vinyl collection into FLAC for posterity. I've been using a beta build of Audacity to record the audio input which works quite well. It even autodetects silence which is also essential but I haven't figured out a way to get it to automatically split the master wav into individual tracks.
Does anyone know how to do this or can recommend an app capable of performing this feat?
Thanks in advance!

No, you didn't. (none of your 4 points contained anything about
complaining, at least not without whining in another place than
this forum, whatever the point of doing that is). But its good to see that
you might agree that complaining might be a good thing though...

No, there have been constructive posts here. Just look at Traverso, which
was the start of this discussion. Traverso has many nice ideas. Thats
constructive, and Thorsten also seemed to agree that a couple of things in
traverso is very nice.
The impression I get from your (and some others) posts here though, is
that if you say antyhing negative about ardour, someone will
answer with large emotional posts how great ardour is. And thats _not_
constructive. But I agree, ardour is great, but I also think it could be
much better, and I think people should be encouraged to say what they
think about it and not be afraid of being flamed for doing so. I have a
feeling there might be a little bit of group thinking going on here about
ardour, and in case there is, thats _very bad_.
hi!
is there a software similar to this very useful web app?

thanks! :)
ciao,
Marco

This is bullshit. The FSF does not say anything about things like
this, because they are not directly involved in gcc development.
> Released software should be compiled with "-O2" IMHO.
This is true, though, since the Debian policy mandates it, unless
there's a good reason not to (e.g., it has been found to give a
significant performance advantage to use -O3).

using two of four possible inputs with jack I'm able to run my standard
apps like Ardour, Rosegarden, Hydrogen, Bristol, Qsynth with a minimal
latency of 128 Frames/Period and 4 Periods/Buffer at 44100 Hz (=11,6 ms)
without xruns -
BUT(!): sometimes (seems to depend on the extend of use of plugins and
synths), during recording after some minutes from the start an
increasing crackling-noise occurs which makes my record unusable - jack
reports no xruns at all!
I then have to stop and close my apps, restart jack and start all new...
a tedious biz...
Searching the Internet I learned that my Audiocard may not be
"devicecompliant" in terms of USB - whatever this means.
What my question is to the list:
is there any experience yet with a firewire device like Edirol FA-66 and
Freebob in terms of stability? Could I have a chance to come to a better
and more stable performance by using Firewire rather than USB?
best regards and thanks for any hints,
Susanne

Many months ago, I downloaded a complete set of free public domain orchestral samples (I forgot where from).
I intended to make soundfonts out of them. But, the string instruments are driving me crazy.
The samples I have, are nice in that they are complete, but they don't give me a pianistic scale from Cx to Cy. They give me the complete scale on each of the 4 strings.
For example, here's the double bass (the pizz samples of this instrument are the ones I'm most interested in right now):

I'm baffled. Which strings do I use for the soundfont? How do I decide at which pitches to go up from one string to another?
I've played string instruments (mainly guitar and bass), but never been formally taught them. I don't know of any "standard" way to choose where on the neck to place, say, middle C, in absence of any melodic context, if there are 4 or 6 possible places to play that note. I suppose maybe I could create several "patches" in the soundfont, one for each "position" in the neck. i.e. one patch starting at the nut, another further up the neck, and another way high up near the bridge, etc. I could end up with a dozen patches then, for each neck position and for bowed and pizz.
Anyway, any help in figuring out how to do this would be appreciated.
Yes, I will be happy to upload the soundfont somewhere that y'all can obtain it, once it's done.
Alternately, if someone really loves swami and wants to have at this task, I can look around and find where I got the samples from, and point you there to create a soundfont.

Absolutely. Hopefully Jan didn't really mean what he wrote.
