As I write this, Qjackctl shows 14:35 since the last X Run!!!
I don't have this completely narrowed down as to the offending
program(s), however what I did was open the System Monitor and began
stopping programs I thought were either likely offenders or simply
unnecessary. One thing I didn't realize was that Evolution (linux mail
client), despite not being my default mail client and not being active
still had 4 programs running - remains to be seen if that's the culprit.
Here's what I currently have stopped:
ntpd
evolution-alarm-notifier
evolution-data-server-1.10
evolution-exchange-storage
evolution
freshclam
update-notifier
gnome-screensaver
getty (there were 6 instances of this running, all showing the identical
amount of memory being used - I left one on and stopped the other 5 - no
idea what this is - will research it further - but doubt this has
anything to do with the X run issue, since one is still running)
FYI: I'm now at over 22 mins without an X run, still at my 2ms latency
setting and I happen to be watching an HD movie at the same time! (and
no, it didn't take me 8 mins to write this - had to have a pillsbury
turnover break for fortitude ; - )
I'd really like to thank everyone that helped me with this issue - one
of the best things about switching to linux has been the community -
thanks guys!!!

Hello list,
When I set the sample rate for the hdsp multiface using hdspconf to
96000Hz everything is fine.
When I reboot the computer everything is still fine.
When however I turn of the computer and unplug the power to the
multiface and the computer, plug it back in and boot up, then the sample
rate changes randomly, sometimes it starts up in 48kHz, sometimes 32kHz,
sometimes 88..., but never 96000Hz.
I can't find any information about how to force the sample rate to 96000.
I tried "sudo alsactl store 0" but that doesn't work either.
Any help much appreciated.
Tim
Forwarding this message on so it gets in the list archives ... thanks,

It installs fine for me under current wine from git
(roughly wine-0.9.46), so you shouldn't have to futz
around with unpacking it some other way.
Still doesn't play on Wine, though, even though I have timidity
installed and working. Here's a log:
~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Voyetra/Introduction to Songwriting$
wine SONGEX.EXE
fixme:mcimidi:MIDI_mciPlay NIY: SMPTE track start 96:0:3 0.0
fixme:mcimidi:MIDI_mciPlay NIY: MIDI port=0, track=1
fixme:mcimidi:MIDI_mciPlay NIY: MIDI channel=0, track=1
Quite possibly I don't know what I'm doing, though. I don't use
audio much (beyond what Firefox and Flash inflict on me).

I didn't think such a book existed :-)
Did it help you? I'll have a look at it..
Thanks!

Hello,
After some big issues with my integrated firewire port on my laptop, using a
Presonus Firebox sound card, I am thinking about buy an ExpressCard. But I
an not an expert. So I would like some advices choosing a good chip.
Seeking on the Internet I have found some ExpressCard with Texas Instruments
chips or belkin chip... Are they good ones ?
Thanks for your help

I have just built jack 0.107 from svn. I had to install it over the
jack installed from the ubuntu repository, which made me a bit
uncomfortable, but it got Ingen working, and it should get the latest
ardour from svn working with its midi editor, so I could live with
that. It broke qjackctl, but that gave me the opportunity to build a
newer version with jack midi support, so I could live with that too.
However it seems to have broken a whole lot of other jack apps, such
as hydrogen and alsaplayer, and I definitely can't live with that.
Is there a way to get 0.107 working with clients compiled against
older versions of jack?
Failing that, would I be able to get all these apps to work again
against the new version of jack if I simply build my own packages
from source debs, or would I run into further trouble?
Best
Robert

Snd-ls v0.9.8.2
===============
Snd-ls is a distribution of Bill Schottstaedt's sound editor SND.
Its target is people that don't know scheme very well, and don't want
to spend too much time configuring Snd. It can also serve
as a quick introduction to Snd and how it can be set up.
Snd-ls also serves as base code for the San-Dysth softsynth
(http://www.notam02.no/~kjetism/sandysth/) and the Snd-rt music
programming language (http://www.notam02.no/arkiv/doc/snd-rt)
Changes 0.9.7.12 -> 0.9.8.2
---------------------------
-The rt_readin_tag startup bug is finally fixed. Thanks to Josh Lawrence,
Luke Hammon, Martin Rumori and Renick Bell for helping me finding it.
-Improved the build system a bit.
-Guile >=1.8.0 is now required to build and run Snd-ls.
-Fixed bug that caused snd to fail starting if no previously used
soundfile was opened during startup.
-Updated Snd from 8.4/12.9.2006 to 9.3/30.7.2007. Many important fixes.

Greetings,
Yesterday I was playing around with the excellent Phasex synth. I wrote
some long looping tracks for "infinite" playback a la Eno's Music For
Airports, everything played nicely for about 40 minutes, then Phasex
just disappeared. I hadn't launched it from the prompt so I have no
relevant error messages, but I wonder if anyone else has had trouble
running the synth for long periods of time.
Great-sounding synth, btw.
Best,
dp
Hoping someone can help me figure out what's causing X runs at precisely
10 minute intervals - not 9:59, not 10:01 but exactly 10 mins.
My setup:
AMD 64 X2
2 GB DDR2 800 mhz
M-Audio Firewire Solo using Freebob
Sample rate: 96,000
Periods: 3
Frames: 64
Latency: 2 ms
Realtime checked in Qjackctl
Priority = 89
Qjackctl 0.2.21
# ps -C jackd -cmL
shows:

As I understand it, the FF indicates realtime.
Messages from JACK:

Note that in the first instance it's an underrun; 2nd instance an
overrun, which seems odd to me (ie I'd think with the X runs happening
on such a precise schedule it would show the same problem each time).
I've tried using System Manager to track down any processes which might
be scheduled to run every 10 mins and can't pin down anything. I also
tried stopping ntpd but the problem continued.
Other programs which run simultaneously:
- Beryl
- Mythtv backend
Using Ardour neither increases the X runs nor eliminates them - they
still pop up at 10 min intervals.
Any ideas or suggestions? Could Freebob be the problem? Are there system
processes known to run at 10 min intervals that could be interfering?
Also, not sure this has anything whatsoever to do with my X runs, but
Qjackctl also reports a whole series of:
QTextCursor::gotoParagraph Index: 49 out of range
load = 4.1724 max usecs: 26.000, spare = 640.000
load = 4.0381 max usecs: 26.000, spare = 640.000
load = 3.9710 max usecs: 26.000, spare = 640.000
QTextCursor::gotoParagraph Index: 49 out of range
QTextCursor::gotoParagraph Index: 49 out of range
I also tried running JACK from console, with the same results.
Driving me nuts as every time I need to do a take, I have to wait until
an X run hits, then I have a 10 min window to record, which leaves me
thinking about the impending X run, rather than the part I'm playing!
Many thanks!
