Greetings,
I thought some of you might be interested to know that Christian Borss's
HybridReverb2 won 2nd place in the KVRaudio Developers Challenge. The
plugin is a VST in native Linux format. I've tested it in JOST 0.5.5, it
worked fine there, so it should work as well in Renoise, eXT2, and
perhaps QTractor. Free, GPL.

Another native VST reverb has been released by KResearch. I tested the
KR-ReverbFS plugin under JOST, it seems to work well there. Free, closed
source.

The Loomer company has released a new string synthesizer, available for
Linux as a native VST plugin or in a standalone version. Untested here.
The Loomer stuff is commercial software, a bit too pricey for me, but
I've heard good reports from users.

Stupid question, but I don't know whether I should install the i386 or amd64
version of ubuntu studio on my shiny new intel i7 860 system.??

Dear fellow FOSS enthusiasts,
Last week's L2Ork debut was a great success with the performance hall packed and people standing in the back. We've had a tremendous amount of positive feedback and it has been truly hart-touching to learn that people genuinely cared about and were moved by what we had to share. As some of you may be already aware, our story also made the Slashdot and our server has received close to a half a million hits since its posting. Likewise, we've been featured on regional TV channels as well as various international news outlets.
As our thanks to all who have so generously supported us both in person and through the endless corners of the internet, we've posted a track from our weekend recording session. "Citadel" is a piece for soprano and L2Ork that uses a poem by Ivan Gundulic, a famous Croatian poet from the Baroque era. The piece was recorded in a beautifully reverberant Burruss rotunda on the Virginia Tech campus. No post-processing has been applied to the recording beyond a minor eq to soften lows.
To listen please visit http://l2ork.music.vt.edu/main/ and click on the Media->Jukebox, or simply click on the link in what is currently the top post on the L2Ork blog.
Once again, thank you all for your kind support. We will be starting a public l2ork-dev list soon, so if you wish to contribute, participate, or start your own L2Ork, please do not hesitate to join in on the discussion. Likewise, should you feel compelled to leave a comment, please feel free to do so on our jukebox page (no registration required).
Best wishes,

Hi folks, apologies for cross post, not sure where is best bet. I have a
Presonus Firepod, and have just setup Ubuntu studio 9.10 on a gigabyte p55
mobo. I have had no luck getting my firepod working yet and am starting to
wonder if it's the firepod itself. Can anyone tell me what exactly is
supposed to happen with one when you plug it in and turn it on? On my mac,
the light would turn blue. When I turn it on now, the light turns blue
during power up, then goes back to red, with a brief blue blink. I don't see
any entry in /dev for /dev/raw1394.
Any tips on diagnosing this much appreciated!
thanks

Hi drew,
Well, this statement:
"The room impulse responses (presets) which come with
/HybridReverb2/...are free for non-commercial use"
says nothing about the actual licensing for those IRs.
I looked on the Institute's site and could find nothing about any IR
collection and/or licensing policy.
So, from what I read, the plugin is GPL, the library is LGPL, and the
IRs are undefined wrt their license.
Btw, I checked the installation IRs from the original package, i.e. the
smaller collection. Judging from the file names, dates, and sizes it
apears that the included collection is indeed a subset of the bigger set
(I downloaded it too), and presumably covered by the same license, if any.
For further clarification I suggest contacting either Christian or the
Institute.

This is probably something that should be on the Ardour list, but I'm
not subscribed there, and I seldom enough have questions about Ardour to
subscribe...
What's the most logical (and safest) way to take a section out of a
whole timeline, across all tracks, and move it somewhere else?
Probably describing this in computer terms would be too unwieldly for
such a simple idea -- basically I want the equivalent of a tape splice.
If it's necessary to individually move all the affected regions on all
the affected tracks, I can, but I wondered if there's some simpler way.
Also, I noticed some documentation saying the splice feature was unsafe.
(I'm using Ardour 2.7.1.)
I'm working on one of those songs where all the ideas came together, but
in the wrong order. I've got a section about three-fourths of the way
into it that really should have been the beginning...

Hi all,
the Ardour FLOSS Manual is complete (for now), and it looks really
damned good on the screen:
http://en.flossmanuals.net/ardour/
However, Ardour's UI color/contrast scheme (gray on gray) doesn't lend
itself well to the printed page. Adam Hyde and I wanted to ask if there
was anyone on the FLOSS Manuals, Ardour-Users or Linux-Audio-User lists
who could help.
We had the idea that someone with good GIMP skills could work out a
decent contrast-correction that could be applied to all the images to
make them more print-friendly, and then simply execute those parameters
on the entire manual's worth of images as a batch action (preserving the
folder structures, of course!).
The images can be downloaded here:
http://adam.engagetv.com/ard.tar.gz
Please let us know on or off list if you can help with this. I imagine
the corrected images would only be applied to the print version of the
manual as it is available via Lulu.com. (This manual will not be marked
up for profit, by the way!)
Thx+best!
Derek

---Oblique Strategy # 41:
"Define an area as `safe' and use it as an anchor"
Greetings,
The power supply in my main box gave up the ghost recently. It was an
Antec SP-450, and I only now discovered that that particular unit was
not an especially smart purchase (though mine lasted much longer than
many others). The repair guys installed a cheap (and loud!) placeholder
for me until I replace it with something better.
I'd like to get another PSU in the 450-500 watt range, something at
least as quiet as the Antec, in the US$50-$100 price range. I have
experience only with Antec's quiet supplies and would like to know if
there's another recommended brand. Any suggestions ? TIA!
Best,
dp
