Consider a fictional band working here in Australia, trying to get to the point
they may be able to actually pay themselves more than a bit of beer money, or
perhaps even interest the distributor mentioned above. 5 musicians, doing some
live gigs, sometimes touring interstate, paying for someone to mix and the
travel costs from the fees they are paid before they get to pay themselves. They
rent a place to rehearse, covering some of that rent by sharing it with other
bands who pay them when the need it. They have some merchandise and cds they are
selling at gigs etc, and are using that revenue to pay for studio time and
someone to record them. To make some live opportunities for themselves they
organise some events where they hire the venue and pay the technical costs, as
well as organising several other bands to play, they pay these costs out of the
door takings, and pay themselves and the other bands a split of what is left.
The band will quite easily be over the $100,000 revenue while they are just
earning pocket money as actual income for themselves. That $2000 would be much
more usefully spent paying an engineer to help get a recording done than paying
for the right to have mp3s on their laptop to play (or send) to someone who may
be interested in their work.
Mostly such a group chooses the 'pirate' path, but perhaps it's more in their
interests to use a format that isn't considered illegal here without the $2000
payment to an organisation who are paying their employees and shareholders much
more than pocket money.

That seems like a good idea, I will look into that...

I've added an autogen.sh script to the repository,
and an INSTALL_GIT file, so people know they should use it.

These warning seem to indicate you don't have
libtool installed, and autoreconf needs it.
Do you get these warnings with autoreconf -f -i?
Maybe libtool should be a dependency of autoconf,
but isn't in your ubuntu.

So everything is ok after doing autoreconf?
Thanks for reporting this...

Hello LACers!
I've got myself into a mixup. I've booked a hostel in Dublin for the
Conference, but now I want to get out to Maynooth. I've been in touch
with Kilcar B&B and Annette has me covered for Friday night, however,
after that she's full.
I remember someone here was asking about teaming up for a place, so
perhaps there's a chance someone over there is willing to split a room
and costs.
If you don't mind a roommate, please email or call me. I'm in Dublin
right now at Avalon house. I've got a mobile here: 085 7836111. I
will be walking around a lot today, so phone is better.
Thanks gang, I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!
Hi everyone,
This is a small update to aj-snapshot.
Aj-snapshot is a small command-line utility that can be used
to store/restore ALSA and JACK connections to/from an XML file.
This release fixes a small and a big bug:
- Correction to the license headers which referred to the wrong program...
(copy/paste error)
- Make the -i flag ignore clients in both directions.
(in the previous release, only connections FROM the ignored clients were ignored)
The website:
http://aj-snapshot.sourceforge.net/
Git repository:
git clone git://aj-snapshot.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/aj-snapshot/aj-snapshot
Please report bugs on the sourceforge project page (don't be shy ;-)
You will find direct links for bug reports or feature requests on the
main website.
greetings,

I have been lately using a Bluetooth A2DP headset to listen to music.
Every now and then, it drops pitch! It slows the music down, by as much as a semitone, for several seconds, then comes back slowly. I rather like the effect; it's like an old cheap analog vynil turntable with a bad motor or worn belt.
What could be causing this? The signal path is Ogg Vorbis files to Android phone (obligatory Linux content!) to A2DP stereo headset.
Also, I'm very much enjoing the best of 2010 mix! The quality of the music is excellent.
I have it on shuffle along with the latest Radiohead record, and I cannot tell which is the multi-mega-superstar-major-label-millionaire-rock-band release, and which is a guy in his bedroom knocking stuff out on his laptop for fun in spare hours after work. Linux audio is definitely as ready for prime-time as the prime-time is.
I digress, but nonetheless, I will BOX THE EARS of anyone who diverts my precious thread into discussions of apocalypse, conspiracies, or revolution. You have been warned :-)

Hello everyone!
IO just found out, that I have a problem with piping from oggdec to lame. I
did it like I always did and got tis:
oggdec -o - 01.ogg | lame -h - 01.mp3
Decoding "01.ogg" to "standard output" [ 0.0%]LAME 3.98.4
32bits (http://www.mp3dev.org/) Using polyphase lowpass filter, transition
band: 16538 Hz - 17071 Hz Encoding <stdin> to 01..mp3
Encoding as 44.1 kHz j-stereo MPEG-1 Layer III (11x) 128 kbps qval=2 Could not
close sound file
I tried it on the command line, from a script and changed from #!/bin/bash
to #!/bin/sh, I tried it using root and a user.
The problem would be the new sstem, but I don't know why.
Bash version is :
GNU bash, version 4.1.5(1)-release (i486-pc-linux-gnu)
Vorbis tools are version 1.4.0 (self compiled)
lame is version 32bits version 3.98.4.
I can't determine the version of dash, wich sh is linked to, but the man
page seems to be from 2003 and dash is installed from Debian Squeeze.
Any ideas?
Kindest regards and thanks
Julien

Hi,
I bought a new PC with a Gigabyte PH67 UD3 B3 mobo after my old one died.
I own a Delta 44 so I needed PCI slots. It was hard to find a mobo with
PCI slots, it seems to be completely deprecated (same for IDE).
Back to home the tragedy started, the Delta does not work at all, kernel
error message is :
ICE1712 0000:05:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 19 (level, low) -> IRQ 19
invalid EEPROM (size = 255)
ICE1712 0000:05:00.0: PCI INT A disabled
ICE1712: probe of 0000:05:00.0 failed with error -5
If I try to reload the module the computer crash (no more mouse, numlock
does not respond)
I tried some black magic :
- change PCI slot
- disable mobo sound chip
I don't have windows but I don't think it would perform better.
I suspect an incurable motherboard incompatibility :(
Note that my Delta is a bit old, I can see REV-D on the PCB with a 2003
copyright.
This post is my last chance, Delta44 is the perfect card for my usage,
convenient, reliable and extremely well supported on linux.
My system is Ubuntu 11.04 x64 with 2.6.38-8-generic kernel, the problem
was here also with a 32bits ubuntu 10.10. There is some lspci output at
the end.
Many Thanks.

I have been reading and trying to understand the inner workings of the
linux sound system. I know, real shocker that someone is here doing that
huh? lol
A lot of this is just over my head. I will get there eventually but for
right now, I am barely keeping up here.
My question is this. I am using ubuntu 10 on my Compaq SR1911X tower
and I have an Audigy2 ZS installed. The sound works, all the speakers
are working. My system appears to be making use of the 5.1 sound
scheme. But.... Has anyone figured out how to make use of the external
box? Nothing works on mine. Not the volume knobs, inputs etc...
Nothing. So... If someone has some insight or can direct me to where
the needed info is, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for your time!
