If there is one place I would like to see those who spend money on Linux
coders put money into this would be it. I think the HW manufactures might
be willing to talk to people who are in a business over a "hobbyist". If
Harrison (for example) went to any of the Audio Interface makers and said
we would like your IF to work with our product, that would get more
response than an alsa developer who only talks through email or some user
saying "why don't you have a linux driver?"
What has happened instead? Pulse has BT support directly. The money/dev
time has skipped alsa. What can we as musicians do to help here?
PS is Harrison going to release a Mixbus based on A3? They have dropped
the MB2 prices, but no coming soon messages.

Hi, thanks for your help!

worked, with replacing *self->ob_type* by *Py_TYPE(self)* in any C-file.
now I ran into another compilation problem, which I could not find any
solution to:
pyalsa/alsaseq.c:505:13: error: 'PyInt_Type' undeclared here (not in a
function)
pyalsa/alsaseq.c:508:3: error: 'Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_GETCHARBUFFER'
undeclared here (not in a function)
pyalsa/alsaseq.c:509:5: error: 'Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_CLASS' undeclared here
(not in a function)
pyalsa/alsaseq.c:510:5: error: 'Py_TPFLAGS_CHECKTYPES' undeclared here
(not in a function)
Do you have any suggestions?

Hi everyone,
I was trying to build the alsaaudio/pyalsa module for Python 3.
I converted the Python sources with 2to3, afterwards gcc fails to build
the module pyalsacontrol.c:
pyalsa/alsacontrol.c:184:6: error: ‘struct pyalsacontrol’ has no member
named ‘ob_type’
I could not not find any definition of "ob_type".
Has anyone solved this problem?

I'm trying to figure out how to make a screencast using jack.
I have a microphone connected to a firewire soundcard.
I've already excluded recordmydesktop, at least for the audio track,
because of this bug:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=649824
"recordmydesktop: Specifying --use-jack makes recordmydesktop exit with
a bad screen geometry"
recordmydesktop works fine if run without --use-jack. I may use it for
video only. What about audio?
I'm trying jack_capture, which seems nice but I can't make it work: the
.wav file generated is mute.
Can you help me?
Thanks

Hi all,
Hopefully this will be useful to others. I just wrote a short note
describing my experiences when moving from a SysV init script based
OpenMixer[*] system to one that uses systemd. In short, yes, it is
possible, no, it was not easy (mostly because of my own ignorance of
systemd, of course :-)
https://ccrma.stanford.edu/~nando/plog/20130315/
Enjoy!

[*] OpenMixer is a mixing and routing application written in
SuperCollider that manages audio for our 22 channel 3D Listening Room.
It has to start on boot and runs as the "openmixer" user and group, and
I wanted it to not use a regular Desktop "autologin" feature but rather
be a SysV init service...

Change-log:
- Dropped old audio ramping spin-locks as its glitching reduction
weren't that effective anymore.
- Audio bus and track gain may now be set for amplification again, from
+0dB up to +6dB, while using the Mixer strip sliders/faders (an old
function found missing ever since pre-TYOQA).
- Basic LV2 X11 UI support has been added through libSUIL but only
really effective if plugins doesn't support the LV2 External UI
extension in addition which takes precedence on any case.
- Improved precision tolerance on the Tempo Map / Markers dialog.
- Reinstated and fixed (old) warning and impending re-conversion on
loading session files which the original sample-rate differs from
current audio device engine (aka. JACK).
- LV2 Plugin State/Preset name discrimination fix (after a ticket by
Jiri Prochaszka aka. Anchakor, thanks:)
- Linked/ref-counted audio clips must not overlap and now must have a
buffer-size worth of a gap between each other.
- Something fishy has been detected in the SSE (not so) optimized code
from SoundTouch's-inspired WSOLA time-stretching.
- Splitting clips apart is now easier than ever: a brand new entry
enters the main menu scene: Edit/Split (Ctrl+Y) splits up clips
according to current range/rectangular selection.
- Audio clip offsets are now properly corrected when time-stretching is
applied via Shift/Ctrl+dragging any of the clip edges.
- One semi-colon typo was hiding proper descrimination of peak files
used to draw distinct waveforms of time-stretched audio clips.
- Track automation curves are now also affected by Edit/Insert/Range
commands.
- Finally, some visual feedback is shown while audio track export is
running, in he form of a main status progress bar.
- New user option: save backup versions of existing session files.
- Default session directory now set to regular file's path on load.
- A convenient minimum slack duration has been fixed for MIDI SysEx
messages.
- LV2 Time/position information is now asynchronously fed back into
their parameter (control input) ports when designated.
- LV2 State is now properly restored for plugins inserted on buses,
probably solving the Calf Fluidsynth SoundFont information missing on
buses ticket, reported by Albert Graef, thanks.
- Fixed an immediate null pointer crash on creating a parentless new
group while on the files organizer widget.
- Preparations for future Qt5 migration.
Cheers!

Hi,
an external hard drive does spin down too often for my taste. It's a
http://www.wdc.com/global/products/specs/?driveID=762&language=1 and I
wonder if there's a way to disable it.
"All WD external hard drives will spin down (enter into power saver
mode) after 10 minutes of drive inactivity. Once the drive is accessed
again, the drive will exit from the power saver mode and spin back up.
Please Note: This is a permanent feature of most of our external hard
drives and cannot be disabled. WD externals that include the WD
SmartWare software can use the software to change and/or disable this
feature." - http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1376/
Regarding to a German PDF SmartWare doesn't support this particular
external hard drive and even if it would, it seems to need Windows or OS
X.
I guess it's impossible to disable it or to increase the time, but
perhaps it's better if I anyway ask the community.
Is there a way to adjust this feature? I fear that spinning up and down
again and again, will reduce the lifetime of the drive significantly and
assumed I'll use it for recording, it might cause performance issues.
Is it possible to use such drives for recording, without any risk? If I
would test it, I might not cover all worst case scenarios, think it
wouldn't cause issues and then be surprised if it fails in an
unfavorable moment.
This drive should be used as a backup media only, but I'm thinking to
buy an additional external hard drive for recording, to be able to visit
a Windows user (Mac became seldom here :), but to boot Linux from the
drive and to record on the drive.

Ralf

Warning!! This will require hand editing a file... suggest vi or emacs ;)
All kidding aside, for xfce (Xubuntu or UbuntuStudio where this seems to
have started) lets do it the gui way :) The settings manager has a
selection in the system area called "Session and Startup". This has a
dialog that pops up so choose the "Application Autostart" tab. There is an
"Add" button at the bottom, it pops up a small dialog...
Name: set to "Start Session Locked".
Description: "Start Session Locked" (I figure it is self explanatory, but
feel free to give a better description).
Command: xscreensaver-command -lock
Submit that... Ok that took about as much time to figure out as it took to
type it all in. Let me test it now :)
xscreensaver-command runs too soon and I get:
xscreensaver-command: no screensaver is running on display :0.0
in ~/.xsession-errors
Ok, try:
sleep 5; xscreensave-command -lock
It seems that whatever is running the command line does not know what ;
means :P
What does work:
bash -c "sleep 2s ; xscreensaver-command -lock;"
And yes, even with 2 seconds delay, at least on my machine, the
workstation is locked before the ui is fully up... that is, no menu is yet
available.
Yes this is probably more than non-CLI literate users can figure out on
their own.
c-a-f* still works, but the VTs require a password anyway.
No I will not be adding this option to UbuntuStudio or suggesting it to
the Xubuntu team. (feel free to do so yourself) The only advantage to this
I can see is a shorter time from password to use. Could be a pain on
machines with more than one user.

New version of AATranslator is out. It's an indispensible tool for
moving sessions between different DAWs. It also supports
Ardour2/Mixbus & Ardour3 (read only for the latter) and runs very well
under Wine.

Subject: AATranslator Release Version 5.6
To: AATranslator <info(a)aatranslator.com.au>
Hi,
As usual we have another release crammed full of improvements and
support for additional daw features. A lot of effort in this release
has been geared towards conversion of clip 'stretch' and clip 'pitch'
details and while we haven't covered every format that we support we
certainly have covered most.
To make things a little easier we also added 'drag 'n' drop' support
so you can just drag the supported file into the import window/pane
and you can also drag a folder into the 'location' window/pane and AAT
will change its current position to that folder.
Like most releases it has been months in the making and as always we
thank you for your continued support and once again reinforce our
commitment to our product so do not hesitate to contact us for
assistance or if you have concerns about our product or a particular
conversion.
