I told some friends to come over tomorrow to make a recording ... and, of
course, I can't get things to work on the computer. Hope someone can set me
straight.
I'm using pulse and audacity ... yeah, I know someone will tell me that
will never work, but it's worked just fine in the past. So, lets continue :)
I'm using a Audiobox USB interface with a single mic. I have tried
different mics and cables, so I'm pretty sure that's not the problem.
In the pavucontrol program the audiobox shows and I select
Analog Stereo Output + Digital Stereo (IEC958) Input
Now, when I bring up audacity I have 3 inputs available. Well, this time
... sometimes I have a list as long as my arm. But, for now lets use the
short list:
HDA Intel ...
Pulse
Default
Both Pulse and Default appear to work as recording devices. Funny, though
is that at other times I've gotten a raft of HDA lines, USB lines, etc.
Doesn't seem to make sense to me.
First off, lets test playback of a track in audacity to phones. Great ...
perfect. Audacity (and everything else on the system)plays though the
device into the phones. I'm happy.
Now, I will record. I get the waveform. I speak into the mic ... and then I
play back ... and it is just awful, scratchy crap.
So, if you've read this far my problem is that I am getting crappy, very
crappy, recording quality with the audiobox interface and audacity.
Suggestions?

I was very busy for a few months with the transformation of an old
vacuum tube radio into a Theremin. The result is really amazing and
very fun to play. It is documented here:

I post it here because I think (wrongly or not...) than some of you
may be interested by such a vacuum tubes project. The audio part
makes also an outstanding guitar amp.

interface that made me write Ardour.
Just tried a 2nd test method: "pasuspender audacity" Now I get "proper"
input/output listing in audacity. The recording quality is worse or no
better.

Hi there,
I'm currently taking part in a game jam and I'll have to do a whole lot
of voice recordings tomorrow.
I have barely any experience with that.
I do have a laptop, USB audio interface, mic, stand and a bunch of
questions.
1) Room: Besides corridors and such I have access to a roughly 2x10 m
room or a bigger room, I guess 10x20 m. I guess go for the bigger one?
They are both rather empty, safe for tables and chairs.
2) Recording software? Ardour, something simpler?
3) Post processing, normalization of some sort. I'll have at least four
total amateur voice actors and all in all hundreds of lines.
4) What did I forget?

Mmm ... i have an old machine here like a pent up 75mhz or such it has my
old awe 32 as a soundcard just needs some ram .... kind of like that idea
having a separate recording box with RME cards. No idea what that should
cost though but willing to sign in blood ;) they would be in good hands
and treated like historic valuables in a working museum.
No im not begging no... :)

Hey all,
some of you (e.g. users of free.fr [1]) are currently seeing problems
with the LAD/LAU mailing lists. It seems to be triggered by those mail
servers still trying to negotiate handshakes using obsolete and unsafe
SSLv3 ciphers.
Several of you might have received an unsubscription notice from the
mailing list. Please note, that this is not done out of malice, but
because after several connection drops, mailman will automatically kick
subscribers off the list - which is usually good for non-existing
mail hosts or mail addresses.
However, in this particular instance I think it is due to us not
allowing those SSLv3 ciphers anymore (most mail providers actually
don't) and have not done so since the beginning of the year
(configuration-wise nothing has changed significantly in quite some time
either, which is even more pointing in an outwards direction).
The only solution to this - to my opinion - is to fix your mail server
setup (if you operate your own mail server) or ask your mail provider to
fix theirs (if you are using someone else's services).
You can validate the functionality of your TLS setup [2] before and/or
afterwards.
If both are non-viable options for you, I suggest switching to a mail
provider, that has a more well-maintained and configured mail server
setup (as we're able to deliver to other mail providers just fine).

Hi all,
As happens every year with very special winters, the thousand year old
tradition of Acid December takes places this year! What is special with
this years winter you may ask: there is Acid December!
Some of you contributed delicious acid in 2015 and perhaps you want to
do it again?
For those of you new to this, it is very simple: every day during
December a track is released on acid.datapop.se Depending on the amount
of contributions, this can last long into the months after. The music
should be acid (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid_househttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid_techno ). You may include a picture,
a text and a link to wherever on the interwebs you'd want to be found.
Or stay anonymous. Obviously your tracks need to be licensed in a way
that permits being freely distributed in a non-commercial context.
Please submit reasonably sized mp3/ogg files.
