Hey hey,
I have a lot of OGG and MP3 files, already on a remote server. I need to
change/add comments. Is there a way of doing it without downloading the (full)
files? I could mount the remote directory into my system.
I tried building vorbis-tools statically, but my system only provide dynamic
libraries and I'd also love to avoid building a whole chain of dependencies.
The remote system also is a 64bit Linux, but a different distro and I can't
globally install software.
Best wishes and thanks,
Jeanette

Hi,
Long story short, I am messing with my audio on a UbuntuStudio 16.04 laptop.
I had it setup to use XUSB from my X32...
I want to do some work without the X32, so I said, self, just fire up
Qjackctl and set it back so the config with a Pulse sink/source and the
system output is going to the local hardware.
Except, the default config has been lost. After some messing around, I get
the pulse source/sink, but audio is not routed to the local speakers (this
is a laptop).
Patchage shows the pulse sink connected to system/playback and if I play
audio from an app (for example clementine) configured to the pulse sink, it
shows signal in the Output Devices tab in volume control on the pulse sink.
Basically, as far as I can tell, I've managed to screw up my audio config
on this PC.
I admit the sound configuration on linux has been my nemesis for years...
After much googling and reading until eyes are blurry...I could use some
ideas on what to look at or how to figure out what I f'd up.
:(
Regards,
Mac
Hello all,
The zita-convolver library has been updated to 4.0.0.
This is a major version change, and there are some
(small) API changes. See the README for details.
Jconvolver has been updated for the new library
Nothing much new here, except that you can now set
the Jack client name in the config files.
As always:
<http://kokkinizita.linuxaudio.org/linuxaudio/downloads/index.html>
The new zita-convolver library is also a requirement
for zita-jacktools (to be presented at the LAC), which
will be available tomorrow.

Just to be clear, I wrote:

NG, and just froze part of the way through."
Both the formatting and the quick performance tests are built-in functions
of the H5, accessible from the menu. My question is whether the H5
freezing is an indication of a defect of the H5, or not. Even assuming the
SD card is defective, should that happen?

Hello everyone,
In my testing of my new Zoom H5, I foolishly did not test the standalone
recording capabilities, which require a working SD card.
I tried using the included SD card. When I tried to format it, I got an
error. When I tried the quick performance test, it alternately gave me NG,
and just froze part of the way through.
I have like one day left to return this to Amazon India. Should I do so or
not. I just checked my account and it says returnable till July 7th. It's
now the morning of the 6th (local time is IST = UTC+5.30). So I don't have
a lot of time to think about it.
Even assuming it is a corrupt SD card, should the Zoom freeze like that?
And if it is not corrupt, something is clearly wrong. I don't have any
other way to test the SD card. Should I buy another SD card and try it
with that. As you can see, I don't have much time.
Thanks in advance for any advice. Please CC me on any reply.

Hello everyone,
I've posted a question about using the Zoom H5 as an audio interface
to sound.stackexchange.com, see
https://sound.stackexchange.com/q/44364/24842
I've found scattered references to H5 working on Linux. One is on this
mailing list -
http://linux-audio.4202.n7.nabble.com/checking-passive-input-frequencies-on…
But I can't get it to work.
I've posted the contents of that question below. Any help would be
appreciated. Please copy me on any reply. Thank you.

###################################################################
I just purchased the Zoom H5 sound recorder, with the intention of
using it both as a sound recorder, and also as a audio interface under
Linux. My OS is Debian stable. Currently 9/stretch.
Unfortunately, there is hardly any documentation on how to use it
under Linux. I managed, by looking at the manual, to get my OS (Debian
stable/stretch) to at least recognize the device.
However, right now I'm not sure how to go with either Stereo or 4
Track. In both cases I end up with a screen that shows `USB AUDIO I/F
XY5`, along with L, R, 1, and 2. But I see no motion in any of these.
However, right now I'm not sure how to go with either `Stereo` or
`Multitrack`. In both cases, it is clear that I need to go with the
`Bus Powered` option. As mentioned in various places, if I choose
`Stereo`, Debian thinks it is the H4, but with `Multitrack` correctly
identifies it as the H5.
In both cases I end up with a screen that shows `USB AUDIO I/F`, along
with L, R, 1, and 2. But I see no motion in any of these.
`lsusb` is showing the following:
Bus 006 Device 006: ID 1686:01c5 ZOOM Corporation
The syslog is printing a bunch of complaints:
May 28 21:38:01 orwell kernel: [1505026.660071] usb 11-1: Warning! Unlikely big volume range (=4294967295), cval->res is probably wrong.
May 28 21:38:01 orwell kernel: [1505026.660076] usb 11-1: [2] FU [Mic Capture Volume] ch = 2, val = 1/0/1
May 28 21:38:01 orwell mtp-probe: checking bus 11, device 3: "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:13.0/usb11/11-1"
May 28 21:38:01 orwell mtp-probe: bus: 11, device: 3 was not an MTP device
May 28 21:38:01 orwell systemd-udevd[28202]: Process '/usr/sbin/alsactl -E HOME=/run/alsa restore 2' failed with exit code 99.
May 28 21:38:02 orwell pulseaudio[6363]: [pulseaudio] alsa-mixer.c: Your kernel driver is broken: it reports a volume range from 0 to -1 which makes no sense.
The H5 is also showing up in `pavucontrol`. The configuration section
offers various options. I'm not sure which one to choose - the options
are:
Analog Stereo Output + Multichannel Input
Analog Stereo Output
Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output + Multichannel Input
Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output
Multichannel Input
Off
If I choose `Multichannel Input`, then it shows up in `pavucontrol`
under `Input Devices`, but the volume level (or whatever it is called)
for that device stays at zero. As it happens, I have another, regular
mic plugged into my main (PCI Express) sound card (Xonar DX) right
now, and that is responding fine. Also, I assume a working mic makes
some noise, and the mics on the H5 are completely silemt.
I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, so help would be much
appreciated, bearing in mind my knowledge of things sound-related is
very limited.
And finally, can someone exactly what an "audio interface" means,
exactly?
Hey hey,
Superbooth is the synth show/exhibition held in Berlin since 2016, formerly
part of the Musikmesse in Frankfurt. It's a crazy, euphoric crowd of musicians
of all colours gathering for three days to not only gaze at new hard- and
software, but also to listen to concerts and do what they love best: talk
about synth and music. :)
This song is a hommage to Superbooth 2018, with special thanks to Andreas
Schneider for organisiing such an inspiring and peaceful show and big thanks
to Gaz Williams for giving me a sound bite, in lieu of a photo, and even
allowing me to use it.
This song is both a mono synth and a single synth challenge, all tracks
recorded with the Arturia MiniBrute analogue synth. The vocoder is also
sung/played through that synth. Everything was sequenced in midish and
recorded, mixed and processed in Nama, using tons of LADSPA and LV2 plugins
from the TAP, Calf, Invada Studio, Guitarix, rkr and Fons Adriaensen
collections. I hope I didn't forget anyone in there. If so: my apologies.
Listen to it here:
http://juliencoder.de/nama/a_song_about_superbooth.mp3http://juliencoder.de/nama/a_song_about_superbooth.ogg
The vocoder is not the best, so you have the lyrics:
http://juliencoder.de/nama/a_song_about_superbooth.html
This is not meant as free advertisement for the companies, but as an
impression of three beautiful, joyful days. Feedback is very welcome.
Best wishes and enjoy,
Jeanette

What's practical is logical. What the hell, who cares?
All I know is I'm so happy when you're dancing there. <3
(Britney Spears)
Something just occurred to me.
Does anyone know if this is transmitted any faster if going computer to computer
rather than between hardware devices. So do you get lower latency?
Also what about keyboards that work entirely as MIDI over USB connecting to a
computer?

V 1.5.8 - Kingfisher
Bright flash of colour.
The most significant changes in this release are all usability ones.
At the request of one user (and agreement of several others) some of the
microtonal settings are now MIDI-learnable, and appropriately highlighted.
The CLI can now open and close instances, and switch between them.
There is a new 'Solo' type 'TwoWay' this works in a similar way to 'Loop', but
(apart from zero) values less than 64 step from right to left, instead of the
other way round. The highlighting is also a bit better. Both 'Loop' and
'TwoWay' also have debounce protection of approximately 60mS.
The CLI can now clear a part's instrument. A fairly obvious option that somehow
got missed.
In the Banks windows Instruments can now be swapped between banks and bank
roots. Banks can also be swapped between roots. This is an extension using
exactly the same controls as those already available for in-bank swaps.
The latest feature is autoloading instances. With this enabled, any instance
that was open when the main one is closed will be re-opened on the next run. If
these instances were set for starting with their default state, then all those
settings will be performed. Therefore, a very comprehensive and detailed
session can be started with a single command!
