[LAU] wav edit program to remove 'dead air'?

Hi guys,

   I'm looking for a command line program to edit out 'dead air' from a wav
file.
I want to run it inside a script on a linux system.

   Also any program that I can use to modify wav files, example, that annoying 
reverb format.
