M8s that's top, thnx for all your suggestions. As I'm skint, I'd
already considered the heath-robinson keyboard - so pure data or super
collider then? If I can get it working then I'll post pictures and
design etc.

that's cool! if you're even cheaper / more hardcore, you can pick up an
USB pc keyboard or a HID joystick (I found many working ones in the
trash), gut it, rewire it in a case with switches, and then use pure
data or supercollider to make midi out of it.
