Oh yea, just tried that, it's pretty awesome, better than i remembered.
I'm using qtractor lately, but that could be an option nevertheless

A bit of an overkill, but you could always use
Ardour's "Import to Region
List" function, which opens a file browser window from which you can easily
playback/preview sound files.
