If a device is class-compliant it will work on Linux without any
trouble. Basically, if it doesn't need a driver to work on a Mac, it'll
work on Linux.

which he wants to be able to play into his linux machine. It has a usb
out - is there a reasonable chance that if I just plugged it in with a
standard usb cable I could get it working?
Try it and see - it should appear as another set of MIDI ports if it
does.
