Well, you could always check the logs to see if anything funny's in there.
Why don't you post the output of
# dmesg
?

Not that I can see.
Not that this means anything to aplay but have you
chmod a+rwx /dev/dsp
It seems like you have everything working on the software side.
If you
are using an amp have you turned it on or the volume up?
