I see there's also the alsaplayer-daemon, which "provides a
non-interactive (daemon) interface to the player, so that it is only
accessible via a remote control application." Perhaps the original
poster could use something like that, if the text version isn't able to
do what's wanted.

alsaplayer used to have this functionality.
Hmmm, it started up a GUI when I tried installing it here. I think the
original poster was looking for a CLI player.
