Last Sunday I set up my laptop for a 3.5-hour

simple recording?
2.5 hours, 44.1KHz, and 4 bytes for sample (i.e. floating point)
require about 1.55G of disk space for 1 channel. (2.17G for 3.5h).
Is there enough space on your temporary directory?
(the default is /var/tmp/audacity-root).
Maybe the WAV file size limit was reached? Wasn't that around 4GB?
WAV64 or somesuch is more sensible for long recording sessions.
