It's a portable layer that provides a callback based API on top of ALSA,
JACK, OSS, Windows (ASIO and MME I think are supported), etc. If
KDE/Qt4 want to be cross platform (and I think they do) it's the only
reasonable choice IMHO.

general question, to those who know far more than me, is
just what would be the ideal sound subsystem for KDE in 2006
seeing there is a clean slate and an opportunity to get it
right from the get go ?
