Doing this with the git:// just sits there until the
connection times out.
Other git repos behave likewise do work with the http:// protocol.
You must be behind a firewall. I'm sorry, but I don't have access to
the server @ tuxfamily that hosts the repositories in order to
configure it to host git over HTTP.
