basically, I agree with Fons. The ominous answer is always "it depends".
BUT... Some EQ'ing and limiting or compression should do the trick if your mic
and recording situation are good enough.
My preferred EQ is fons' 4-band parametric filter, on my ArchLinux it is part
of the package fil-plugins. I think Calf and others also have parametric EQs
with more bands and more options.
I don't feel qualified to suggest a compressor/limiter. Again, Fons has a
limiter out there, which I think is a standalone tool. I'm sure lsp-plugins
might have something suitable as well.
Personally, I don't like to record something with a signal chain pre-fader,
i.e. going into the recorded track. If it helps, you can always apply it for
listening while recording, if you hve specific needs. Otherwise, record first,
process later. I know, this is a question of "school". :)
