Yes, as long as you (or an init script) runs
"alsactl restore" on the
next boot.
Save/restore mixer settings should work OOTB with any decent distro,
normal users should never have to use alsactl.
So how and where do I put this in an init script?
The alsa distribution comes with a script called alsasound. On a RH
or FC system it resides in /etc/rc.d/init.d. You use "chkconfig
alsasound on" to get it to run at boot and shutdown (it has both start
and stop functions). This saves your settings at shutdown and restores
them at boot.
