For laptops, the Intel video chipset seems to be working with recent
distros. I have neither recent Intel hardware nor a recent distro, so
can't help there.
Isn't it ATI which is asking for all kinds of pain on linux? At least
with their closed-source drivers...
For open source since you'd be using the open-source anyway, 2D on
nvidia with neouveau is pretty good, and intel would be good as well.
