Also did you see the maudio quattro asoundrc here:

That might give you something else to work with.

I got zero response to this on alsa-user list, so
I guess I'll try alsa-devel...
On further thought, it'd probably be better to start at the distro
level (Ubuntu) - can someone suggest a basic .asoundrc that I can use
to test whether the file is being picked up at all, then I'll file a
bug in Launchpad.
