i can't speak for XP personally but i just
installed linux alongside w2k
on my latitude C400 with no problems. I used ntfsresize to resize
the partition. No non-free software needed :)
The ntfsresize page claims it works with XP.

i wish i didnt have to run Borg Edition at all... if i had my own way
it'd be software libre all the way on my machine, but for work its a
necessary evil...
