Oops...spoke too soon. It works! But for some reason, not
with portaudio v.19 using Alsa [I'm running Csound], only with
OSS (emulation). With a direct connection to Alsa (using plughw:num),
it works.
This might be because it does not seem to like to be connect
via hw:num, but plughw:num (portaudio seems to use the former).
In any case, I've got what I wanted, the latest kernel, with realtime
preemption, working with my USB card.

USB audio is broken in 2.6.15. It will be fixed in the next 2.6.15.x
release. In the meantime you can install ALSA CVS.
