It definitely says "disabled" when I look in the bios.

Check.

Check.

There isn't a 1.0. There is an 0.9, which is attached. But "dpkg -l
alsa-base" says I'm running 1.0.5a-1.

I don't have one.

The mixer is turned up, as far as I can tell. There are some things
that are 0 but I don't think they're the important ones. Attached is
the amixer output:
The thing I see that's wrong that may be relevant is this:
debian:/etc/apt# depmod
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.26-1-686/pcmcia/prism2_cs.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.26-1-686/alsa/snd-pdaudiocf.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.26-1-686/alsa/snd-vx-cs.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.26-1-686/alsa/snd-vxp440.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.26-1-686/alsa/snd-vxpocket.o
debian:/etc/apt#
At the end of all the time fiddling with this yesterday I ended up
with the 2.4.26 kernel with the relevant alsa-modules loaded. I'm
getting no error messages when I try to play sound; just no sound.
