it is disappointing in my case but good to know that alsaplayer does not support
multi-channel (3 or more channels) audio playback.I also contacted the developers. Maybe
these emails would motivate them to implement this feature in near future ;).

It would appear that alsaplayer does not support multi-channel audio files
(and I assume in this context it really means files with more than two
channels).
