As far as I could tell there was absolutely no consensus, though it
was fairly widely agreed that (i) neither is perfect, (ii) most
people with an opinion have a _really strong_ opinion, (iii) it would
be nice to have consistency about things like which mouse operation
resets the control to its default, and (iv) people like arguing about
this stuff.
I'm keeping my own opinion out of it this time. Arnold, I suggest you
try them both out thoroughly in a real world situation, pick the one
you prefer to use, and stick to that.

returning to some sort of sliders, they're far more
convenient in a GUI, since their movement follow better the
movement of the mouse.
i'm betting that the way it actually is manipulated is that drawing
a straight line with the mouse up or down turns the knob [...]
