PCI(e) Audio Interfaces. USB devices seem to randomly vanish without anyone
touching the plug even. My 10 year old PCI AI is more stable (and can do
lower latency) than any USB device I have tried yet.
I have no such problems at all
with my UA-25 usb interface, it is more
stable than my PCI HDSP card in fact, so ymmv.
Even my USB qwerty keyboard comes and goes sometimes.

look into usb autosuspend / laptop-mode-tools
which drove me crazy losing my mouse and keyboard sometimes.
