Actually further searching seems to confirm it is just FM modulated analogue audio.
Can't find any specifics like bandwidth etc though.
Either way you're not going to get any tape compression from bouncing to it and back.
Also NICAM isn't it? Which is 14bit adaptive
digital audio.
AFAIK NICAM was used only in TV broadcasting, not in any
videotape format.
