Let's suppose the way to go is to buy commercial sounds. Would you go
for .sf2 or for .gig files? Which one, fluidsynth or linuxsampler do a
better job rendering synth-like sounds?

There will be something soon, a website where you can upload and
download various types of files.. I am not sure exactly when it will be
open to the public, but I've talked about it a number of times before,
and work is going slowly, but surely. It will be announced here when it
is ready.
