At first, because of recent discussion on the list about using all Linux
software and no external hardware (where do you draw the line? Should a
musician give up his guitar or MIDI keyboard or sax?) I was going to do
this entirely within Linux except for the MIDI data stream (no audio)

Don't let some "fools" make you throw out your equipment just because
it isn't linux-based! The sample sounds real cool (just listened to
your piece once again).
On LinuxTag we have external synths every time because the
professional audience doesn't want to know about the
freaky-cool-softsynths (at least not exclusivly) but wether LinuxAudio
integrates with their equipment they have and use. And I think
"demo-songs" showing exactly this are good too. Especially if they
sound great like your piece or like the recording "Cold Duck" that Ron
Parker posted some months ago!
