Hello all,
I'm a major contributor and volunteer at Mandrake, and I've been working
to get Mandrake up-to-date and more complete with regard to audio
applications, so I thought this would be a good place to come for
advice. If you have a few minutes, please answer any of the following
questions you can. Doing so will help make Mandrake 9.1 the best audio
distribution on the planet...
1. If Mandrake 9.0 is your primary distribution for audio, what is your
#1 complaint?
there is a major problem with the alsa distribution with Mandrake 9.0
which causes really badly distorted sound when used with the m-audio usb
quattro - i had to remove the distributed modules entirely and use CVS
tarballs to solve this problem as it wasnt resolved by using the Cooker
upgrades.
3. What audio applications are we missing (please
check current list
provided below, as many new apps have been added since 9.0)?
SpiralLoops, spiralsynthmodular, spiral synth
Ceres3
cinelerra
broadcast2000
snd
pd
jmax
csound, cecilia
4. What thee audio applications do you consider the most
valuable/important? (do not include alsa, jack, mixers, or ogg/mp3
players/encoders)
ceres3
spiral loops
broadcast2000/cinelerra
Thanks very much. I appreciate your time, and please let me know
personally if there is anything else I can do to make Mandrake more
audio-friendly.
actually i've always had problems with Mandrake's auto-configuring of
sound - i think it would be good to have more options for configuration
built into the install program, as they are with X or printer and modem
config. Mandrake 9.0 detects the wrong soundcard for my thinkpad 600e
and wont yet configure my usb-audio soundcard... maybe i just pick the
wrong cards - the first one i struggled to install was the Turtle Beach
Pinnacle under mandrake 7.0.... but i've stuck with it as i like
Mandrake as a distro... maybe Mdk could take a leaf out of SuSE's book
with having multimedia easily configured at install....
