is Timidity server running ?
Sometimes i have problems with it. It prevents some applications to connect
alsa.
Try to stop it if it's running.
I do it by typing:
service timidity stop (as root)

sure, you must have jack running _before_ you start qsynth.
When I want to open qsynth on Ubuntu while
jackctl is already running
I'll get these messages:
Turn off the setting in Qsynth that starts jack when Qsynth starts.
