That's one way, or you can build on what has been
done by others,
picking up where they left. Being influenced, even strongly so, is still
a far cry from attempting to recreate more or less exactly what others
have done.

Very much what I was thinking.
I agree that mainstream 'consumer' music is is pretty dire, and getting worse,
but there is highly original stuff around too. However, you have to
go out and look for it. That suits me fine :)
