and USB midi, which is not my desire, but I simply wanted to confirm for
the store rep that indeed the Yamaha driver does not work in Linux.

You have to be more specific than that. Which Yamaha models? Which USB
functions? USB-MIDI? USB audio? USB mass storage? DAW integration?
