Do you see anything when running "amidi -a -d -p portname" for all
ports listed by "amidi -l"?

hw:0,0 EMU10K1 MPU-401 (UART)
hw:1,0 Mia // This is interesting. Dunno why this is in there as a MIDI
device, it can't do MIDI at all.

hit keys, wiggle wheel, change settings... nup... nothing...
I think you might need this:
