Thanks a lot, that was exactly it. I was using the fix drz suggested
(the options… thing in asound.conf) and that didn't work. But the
simple ctl.dmixer block did the trick.
I am so far very contented with the Blackjack, it's just dead simple
to use. Have to test real recording yet (only digitised some old
cassettes so far), but I expect the sound quality to be really good
(for that low price anyway).

So I got the Blackjack for Christmas and it works flawlessly with JACK
(playback tested in Ardour and Audacity, I haven't tested recording
yet). In Audacity ALSA playback works without problems as well, but it
doesn't work with Phonon, it seems. I can't get sound out of VLC,
Amarok and the like, it just falls back to my internal soundcard. I am
using KDE on Arch Linux with the recent 3.1.5 kernel – any ideas
somebody how to fix that?
But apart from that I must say that I am impressed and glad that the
Blackjack works out of the box with JACK, that's the important thing
after all. Can't wait to test recording when I am back at my home.
Thanks, drz, for letting us know that the device works. I think I will
have some wonderful time with it. And funnily I also had cast an eye
on the Rode NT-1A microphone, so that will be my next investment.
Happy to hear another success story :)
Could the phonon/vlc have something to do with the default soundcard that
alsa is set to use? try this thing,
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Alsa#Random_Lack_of_Sound_on_Startup it
works for me, alltho I got the sound devices usbpre2 in the end(got a
seriously good deal on it) First that trick of setting default device by
name instead of number didn't work and I tried it oh so many times, until
one day it mysteriously started to work :)
