I agree. For what it is worth, mplayer on my Debian system is linked to
libjack (says ldd), and the package page lists libjack0 as a dependency.

So kudos to the Debian team for doing it.
yes, mplayer works fine here, with jack.
and kmplayer even lets you configure it with the audio driver of your choice.
Very convenient.
