8-bit mono
Have you tried replacing "-t ub" with "-t uw" ?
There's also a "-u" flag for "unsigned linear".
What does 'file' say about your file?

/dev/dsp, it sounds normal. I think the
corruption occurs when that
unsigned byte audio is read as signed audio.
