It comes from thrashers that want their CD louder than
some other band
when they stick their CD in a player that's just been playing the other
band. Basically an 'I'm louder than you' mentality. ;-)
So much for dynamic range, I guess. :) They'd have been happy with dbx
companded cassette tapes for all of the dynamic range you're left with.
Even in Mordor, Quality remains the Ultimate Master,
