SGI,used to have a certain degree of usage in 3D special effects but not
so much nowadays. IfSGI do much in post production it tends to be with
high end film compositing tools from Discreet Logic, which certainly
handle audio but very much as second fiddle to their streaming video
handling.
Certainly audio research was done with SGI kit, Sox et al, but certainly
in London the majority of audio work is done with Apple kit.

Linux has made great strides in becoming an end-user OS
for server and office use lately, it is still a hobby OS as far as
audio, video, graphics etc are concerned. You're not going to have
much success convincing people to use it for media purposes unless
they are eager to get their hands dirty. Many of the DM students
argue constantly over Win vs. Mac and when I tell them I use Linux
I just get this really weird look. (At least from the ones who even
know what Linux is.) I would never convince any of them to try
Linux and I'm not going to try. It has to be something you're
already interested in.
I'm probably showing off my inexperience here, but what about SGI? I
thought all the Silicon Graphics stuff had been ported to Linux and
Linux was becoming the OS of choice for Hollywood DM people who used
to rely on SGI because it's Unix-based, and all that. Is that not
true?
