So should I just install jackd from source and then make sure that this version
[in /usr/local] is earlier in my path than the ubuntu installed jackd?

Unless you have a particularly old version of JACK, upgrading JACK is
no more likely to require rebuilding your JACK apps than upgrading
your X11 version requires rebuilding all your X11 applications.
