you need a patched version of pam and to edit limits.conf as outlined here:

With the lsm kernel I could set permissions to my
group ID and then I
could just run everything as me. Do I have to run jackd and pd as root?

PS: I am also curious if there is a linux-announce list for linux made

there is a linux announce for software ... for music, there is mr.
dis-dot-dat's (james) LAM, but i don't think many people are using that,
preferring instead to post here ... maybe you could do both.
