Nope, I'm now successfully playing an MP3 via XMMS through the UA-30
after doing that! One problem, though, is that the playback slows down
and stutters when I try to do much of anything else, such as scrolling a
window in Mozilla.

Looking at the errors below, it looks like the appropriate thing would
be to completely remove alsa and reinstall it -- though that also may be
inappropriate and catastrophic, depending on what's depending on it. Any
clues?
