I'm only surprised you didn't mention
Aural Exciters, which used to be
(don't know if they still are) used to add high frequency information
(distortion) to the sound to make it more "exciting". As I recall (It's
been a while) they tried to add even harmonic distortion.
That is a great example! I forgot about those. BBE and Aphex still
sell a lot of those, I think.
