If you intend to use MIDI, both are well worth investing time & effort into.
MusE is a slightly lighter, poppier editor (It has a drum matrix) and doesn't
need jack to run. Rosegarden is mighty and has an excellent notation editor,
works well with jack and has several useful additional features.
the new muse-0.7(still in a pre-release stage)
won't even start if you don't have jack running:)
