The Dutch version would be more like 'frying in your own fat'. :-)
Interesting: in Italian there is "lasciar coucere/bollire nel proprio
brodo" (let someone cook/boil in their own soup/broth) but it has more
of a fatalist meaning as in "I warned him/her not to do it that way but
s/he wouldn't listen so now leave him/her to do it as they like."
