I've got the impression that Franz Schubert's intention to make music
wasn't the money. I even have the impression that Ozzy Osborne's reason
to make music isn't the money.
I don't think there is necessarily a conflict between what a musician
wants to do, and what lots of people want to hear, and are potentially
willing to pay for. Could it be that some are just lucky enough to be
able to do what they really want to do, and still find a viable market
for it?
