What system is this ? On both Fedora and
ArchLinux the default
is '/etc/asound.state'.
I believe that /var/lib/alsa is the default location in Debian.
And this is good, because it allows /etc/ to remain read-only ...
everything that needs to be written by programs ends up in /var.
